Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an
alternative medicine practice used to assist in clearing & loosening of earwax;
and also to remove toxins from a person's ear by lighting one end of a hollow
candle and placing the other end in gently into the ear canal. This technique is
performed by Deb Selby, LC, IC as an Alternative Therapy to traditional
Western Medicine. Please read the description as follows to educate yourself
on this alternative therapy technique. While Deb makes absolutely & clearly
NO medical claims as to the effectiveness of this treatment technique; certain
clients have reported that this technique has helped to improve their sinus
issues. Other clients who work in environments with high degree of air
pollutants have reported to her after a treatment that it has helped with
increased clarity of hearing. Also, others who have complained of "excessive
itching in their ear canal" have reported that this condition has subsided after a
ear candling treatment, and that they have been quite satisfied with their
results.
During an ear candling treatment one end of a cylinder or cone of waxed cloth is lit, and the
other placed into the subject's ear. Usually the subject is lying on one side with the treated ear
uppermost and the candle vertical, the candle is placed through a piece of aluminum to protect
against any hot wax or ash falling down the side. The flame is cut back occasionally with scissors
and extinguished between two and four inches from the pie tin, using a dish of water. Some of
those who have undergone ear candling report improved hearing and clearer sinuses. Its proponents
claim that the flame creates negative pressure, drawing wax and debris out of the ear canal similar
to the vacuum the chimney in a fireplace creates. This debris often appears as a dark residue &
powdery substance. An ear candling session can last from 45 minutes to 60 minutes, during which
time a series of 1 or 2 ear candles may be burned for each ear, depending upon how much wax
residue is present in the ear canal via the clients description. The experience is generally
described as being unusual, but pleasant and relaxing. During some treatments the client may
experience a lite popping or crackling sound, this is generally due to the water in the ear canal
evaporating as the candle burns down. This procedure is followed by a sinus massage of the face &
head. It is extremely important to let your ear candling technician know if you are experiencing
any unusual ear problems. This procedure should absolutely not be done on people with hearing
implants, ear tubes, or perforated or artificial ear drums.
